About Cold Sores

Cold sores are both physically painful as well as emotionally painful. They can bring embarrassment as well as physical pain.

Many people think that they get cold sores b/c of something they have done (i.e. improper hygiene, etc.). But that’s not true.

What are Cold Sores?

Cold Sores come from the Herpes Simplex Virus (Type 1 usually causes cold sores). Cold sores can also be called Skin tags or Fever Blisters.

These Skin Tags are contracted by direct contact, either from direct contact w/ the sore or via an infected persons saliva.

You can contract the Herpes Simplex Virus from someone who has the virus even if they don’t have a visible or current cold sore. The virus is however, much more contagious when someone has a current outbreak of a cold sore.

Ways to Prevent Cold Sores

If you have the Herpes Simplex Virus, as you know cold sores can rear they’re ugly head (no pun intended) at any time, so the best thing to do is to avoid situations that cause cold sores. Some of theses things  you want to avoid are:

  • Being in the sunlight without chap stick (with sun block) on your lips
  • Excessive stress (good luck w/ that one ;) )
  • Any type of sickness such as flu or cold, etc.
  • Injury to your lips
